 Summary:
Excavation of the rock mass causes a change of stress, or concentration of stress around the contours of the excavation. This paper presents a procedure for calculate occurrence of plastic failure in the rock mass around the tunnel excavation. The calculation is done using the program Phase 2 based on finite element method in which the integrated Hoek – Brown's failure criterion. Using the program RocLab calculated deformability and strength of rock mass, while the rough estimate of deformations (diameter plastic zone and convergence contour tunnel excavation) was made using the program Rocsupport. The procedure of calculation is shown in the example of the traffic tunnel, circular cross – section, with two lanes. This way of modeling is important because it provides insight into the behavior of rock mass at all stages of excavation. In other words, the results of this analysis indicate the stability of the areas where we can expect plastic fracture of rock material.
