 Summary:
This paper describes the connection between the sustainable urban planning and climate change, the importance of proper consideration of all natural and artificial conditions in the planning of settlements, in order to meet all human needs. Paper presents connections between the terrain, sunlight and shadows on a case study of individual housing estate on territory of Palilula municipality, part of City of Niš. Built residential area is located on the northern slopes of the hill Gorica, which in the winter months in the afternoon remains without sun rays. The paper shows the average length of shadows of residential buildings on the northern and southern sides of the same pitch and what are the architectural possibilities to maximize sunlight.
