 Summary:
Steel constructions include axially compressed elements that require analysis of stability. Existing analytical solutions to the stability problem are mostly based on crude assumptions and do not adequately account for the geometrical imperfections and semirigid connections of elements. In this paper, a railway bridge truss strut subject to compression is analysed by the finite difference method and the second order theory, and values for stresses, displacements and element effective buckling length are obtained.
