 Summary:
Porous asphalts are applied all over the world to minimize the effects of noise caused by traffic. Thus, for example, in the Netherlands and Denmark two-layer porous asphalts are most commonly used. Generally, it was proved that these pavements efficiently reduce noise when they are new, but this characteristic significantly changes as the pavement gets older. Besides the effect of noise reduction, due to their open texture and drainage capacity, porous asphalts decrease the impacts of splashing and spraying water behind a moving vehicle. In this paper, in addition to the basic characteristics, the application of porous asphalts in terms of storm water drainage in urban areas is specifically analyzed, as well as the deficiencies related to their maintenance.
