 Summary:
When dimensioning piles predominantly loaded by horizontal forces (marinas, harbors, costal walls, deep excavations) it is necessary to perform a calculation of the displacement (SLS) in conjuction to calculations by limit state method (ULS – according to Eurocode). The main problem assosiated with calculation of displacement is determination of soil deformabilty parameter, particulary when the subject soil is made of aluvial sediments (sands, soft clay and like). This paper presents a calculation method for the determination of horizontal modulus of soil along the pile mantle, on the basis of the result of static (CPT) and standard penetration tests (SPT). Calculation of horizontal displacement due to the heterogeneity of the layers is tipically performed numerically using the finite difference or finite element methods.
