Dragan Milašinović, Corresponding Member of Academy of Engineering Sciences of Serbia (AESS) since 2007, was born in Sarajevo to father Dušan and mother Zora, maiden name Jerkić, on 27 June 1954. He finished secondary school in Sarajevo in 1972. In 1978 he graduated from the Department of Structures of the Sarajevo Faculty of Civil Engineering, where he subsequently earned his master’s degree in 1986. In 1988 he was awarded his doctoral degree at the same Faculty in nonlinear structural analysis by the finite strip method. As the best student of his generation and for his excellent achievements during studies, he was awarded the Energoinvest Award. The Bosnian and Herzegovinian Society of Civil Engineering Designers awarded his doctoral dissertation as the best work in the field of civil engineering design for 1988. He is married to Vesna; they have two sons, Nenad and Ljubomir.
From 1978 to 1982, he worked at the Design Bureau ‘Traser’ in Sarajevo as a designer and chief design engineer for bridges and tunnels. From 1982 to 1992, he worked at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Mostar as an instructor; until 1990 he held the rank of assistant professor; finally, he was promoted to the rank of associate professor and taught the courses Structural Analysis, Theory of Plates and Shells and Concrete Bridges until 1992. From 1988 to 1992, he was Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Mostar. From 1993 to 1996, he worked at the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad as an associate professor, teaching the course Theory of Plates and Shells. In 1998 he was promoted to the rank of full professor at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Subotica, where he was Head of the Chair for Engineering Mechanics until 2006. During that time he taught the master’s degree courses Numerical Methods and Concrete Rheology. Since 1998 he has also taught Technical Mechanics and Strength of Materials, as well as Wooden and Metal Structures, at the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering in Banja Luka. There he also teaches the master’s degree course Numerical Analysis and Finite Element Method.
Until 2008 he authored or co-authored 10 research papers dealing with rheological dynamic analogy and numerical methods in computational mechanics, published in leading international journals; he is also the author of 16 papers published in the proceedings of international symposiums, conferences and congresses. He has published 17 papers in national journals and 18 papers in the proceedings of national conferences. He authored a monograph in English – The Finite Strip Method in Computational Mechanics, Faculties of Civil Engineering: Subotica, Budampest, Belgrade. He is also the author of the textbook The Finite Strip Method in the Structural Analysis with Computing Programs, Faculty of Technical Sciencies Novi Sad. He has participated as an expert in eight national projects in the area of structural and continuum mechanics, of which two deal with basic research, and the rest with technological development. As a designer and design engineer he has participated in the design of around thirty tunnels and bridges, mainly prestressed concrete structures. He assisted in two rehabilitation projects for the Old Bridge in Mostar by setting the differential equation and solution of ration axis (resultant polygon of forces) of the Old Bridge, taking into account the specific loading and the frictional force between the stone blocks. He is the author of a number of software solutions in computational mechanics. He conducted the preparation of the master’s thesis entitled A Contribution to the Analysis of the Influence of Creep and Shrinkage of Concrete in Composite Structures at the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad, as well as of the doctoral dissertation entitled Nonlinear Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Frames under earthquake ground motion at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade.
He first began his work in the area of computational mechanics in 1982, which after several years led to the publication of a monograph which presents the main procedures and details of application of the finite strip method in the static and dynamic analysis of engineering structures and elements for geometrically nonlinear elastic structure models. A special chapter is dedicated to geometrically nonlinear viscoelastic problems as well as rheological dynamic analogy, with an emphasis on the significant material nonlinear behaviour of structures. The book emphasizes the advantages of the method versus alternative traditional approaches and presents its mathematical and algorithmic contributions relevant for engineering usage. The rheological dynamic analogy was originally proposed by this author in 1996 as a mathematical-physical analogy between the new viscoelastoplastic rheological model and the dynamic model with viscous damping. The analogy allows to solve complex material nonlinear problems of structures as much simpler temporal linear dynamic problems. This has been proved in the case of problems of postbuckling behaviour of columns, fatigue, the viscoelastoplastic response following monotonous and cyclical loading, as well as of the calculation of dynamic characteristics, of which effective stiffness and effective viscous damping coefficient are particularly important. The analogy was successfully used in problems of fracture, which fundamentally depends on atomic bonds. This has allowed to introduce a single multi-scale analysis, where the characteristic length of the model equals the length of the standing wave.
